Within the darkness of the night

I do not know what love is

songs of the dark

speak only of the spaces

in-between

Yet there is warmth here

I can hear the water trickle by

I can hear and understand

how there are voices

within a chanting summer chorus

as unique as my own

and yet also truly knowing

of each other

and of the distance

between us all

Within the darkness

of the night

I do not know

what love is

but,

if I listen

very, very

carefully,

can hear

you breathe.
